Named for Angela Dorothea Merkel (née Kasner; born 17 July 1954) a retired German politician who served as the chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021 and was the first woman to hold that office.
As Minister of the Environment, Merkel was instrumental in setting up the United Nation's 1995 Berlin Climate Change Conference. She is often credited as having brought about its most notable result, the first international commitment to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
